Are There Termites in that Mulch?

by Susan Pruden
March 10, 2006

Today's gorgeous weather got me thinking about being outdoors, getting a start on spring yard chores and then I got one more email warning me about Formosan Termites in mulch. I've received a ridiculous number of them over the past week or so. Perhaps someone has sent it to you, as well.

It's Not True.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry issued a press release about this rumor, saying that a quarantine was put in place last fall to keep Formosan termites from spreading. They also said that they are being inundated with calls about the rumors.

Snopes.com is one of the websites that de-bunks urban legends. Snopes hasn't let me down in this case, either. Read their take on the Formosan termite rumor.

I don't think I've ever gotten an email like the Formosan termite one that was real or true. I can't believe how many people I know forward this stuff just in case it's true. It takes a very short time to look it up on Snopes or even in Google to check it out. Take a moment to verify the information before passing it on.

I promise you will never get an email from me like this unless it has been thoroughly verified by me.

I will say that spending a little time on these urban legend sites is entertaining. It's amazing what kinds of things we will tell one another. Check out DarwinAwards.com for a little light reading. DarwinAwards are actually true, but they've included internet hoaxes as well.

Too nice a day to spend on the internet, though. Go outside!
